Sealants & Fluoride

Preventing a cavity is always easier than filling one. Dental sealants and fluoride treatments are quick, painless and inexpensive, and together they dramatically reduce the number of fillings a child needs growing up. Adults benefit too, particularly anyone with dry mouth, exposed roots or a history of decay.

Sealants are a thin protective coating painted into the deep grooves of the back molars, where toothbrush bristles simply cannot reach. No freezing and no drilling are involved: we clean and dry the tooth, apply the resin, and cure it with a light. Sealants are most valuable soon after the permanent molars come in, around ages six and twelve, and we check them at every recall visit.

Fluoride strengthens enamel and can remineralize early decay before it ever becomes a cavity. We apply a professional-strength varnish to clean teeth in under a minute. It is safe for children and adults, and we will advise you on the right toothpaste and rinse to use at home.

Fluoride is especially worth discussing if you have braces or clear aligners, take medications that cause dry mouth, have receding gums exposing softer root surfaces, or drink well water rather than treated municipal water, which is common for our patients on acreages around High River.

Both treatments are commonly covered by dental plans and under the Canadian Dental Care Plan. We bill insurance directly, so most families pay nothing at the desk.
